🌿 A Discovery We Never Expected
Historic Well Maryland – When Karen and I purchased Timber Valley Retreat, we knew there would be plenty of hard work ahead. Years of deferred maintenance had left the farm in need of repairs, cleanup, and restoration, but we never imagined one of our greatest discoveries would be hidden beneath a pile of old lumber and debris.
While clearing an old concrete slab behind the farmhouse, we uncovered what looked like nothing more than a small hole in the ground. As we carefully removed years of accumulated debris, we realized we had found something truly remarkable—a historic well that had been forgotten over time.
That unexpected discovery led to one of the most rewarding restoration projects we’ve ever undertaken. What began as a cleanup project became an opportunity to preserve a piece of the farm’s history and uncover a flowing spring that still nourishes the land today.

🪣 Climbing Into the Unknown
Once we realized we had uncovered a historic well, curiosity quickly took over. We wanted to know how deep it was, what condition it was in, and whether anything remained beneath the years of accumulated debris.
Before the well house was ever built, we lowered a ladder into the opening so I could climb down inside. As I descended farther into the well, the crew above carefully supported the ladder with boards between the rungs so it would remain secure while I worked.
One bucket at a time, they lowered a rope while I filled bucket after bucket with old lumber, rocks, trash, and years of forgotten debris. Then they pulled each bucket back to the surface, slowly revealing the original stone walls hidden beneath.
The deeper we cleaned, the more exciting it became. Every bucket removed uncovered another piece of the well’s history, and we couldn’t wait to see what we would find at the bottom.

🛠️ Preserving a Piece of History
Once the well had been completely cleaned and the flowing spring was visible once again, we knew we wanted to protect it for future generations.
The original hand-dug stone well remains beneath the structure you see today. To help preserve it, a concrete block well casing was built around the opening. That work was completed by the father of Randy, who worked with me in my lawn business and was an experienced mason.
Randy then framed the well house and installed the metal roof that now protects this remarkable piece of Timber Valley’s history.
Looking back, I’m grateful that we took the time to save it. What could have remained buried and forgotten has become one of the most unique places on the farm—a quiet reminder of the people who came before us and the lasting value of preserving our history.

Long before modern water systems, hand-dug wells were an essential part of everyday life on farms throughout Maryland. Families depended on natural springs and groundwater for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and caring for livestock. Every well represented countless hours of hard work and was often one of the first improvements made to a new homestead.
Many of these historic wells have disappeared over the years as properties changed hands and newer water systems replaced them. Others were filled in or simply forgotten beneath years of vegetation and debris.
Discovering and preserving our well gave us a deeper appreciation for the people who first settled this land. It reminded us that every stone was placed by hand and every foot of depth required determination and perseverance.
Today, preserving places like this allows future generations to better understand the history of rural Maryland and appreciate the craftsmanship that helped shape farms like Timber Valley Retreat.
