Years of neglect had left the area covered with old lumber, broken concrete, and decades of debris. While cleaning up the property, we uncovered what appeared to be nothing more than a small hole in the ground. As we carefully removed the debris, we realized we had discovered a historic hand dug well.
What followed became one of the most memorable restoration projects we’ve ever undertaken. Climbing down into the well, one bucket at a time, we removed years of accumulated debris to reveal something remarkable beneath it all.
Crystal-clear spring water was still flowing through the natural stone walls.
Today, that same natural spring continues its quiet journey beneath Timber Valley before feeding our beautiful Spring-Fed Pond, connecting two of the property’s most unique natural features.

🪣 Discovering the Well
When Karen and I purchased Timber Valley, we had no idea a hand dug well was hidden behind the farmhouse.
As we worked to restore the property, we spent countless hours cleaning up years of neglected lumber, scrap materials, and debris. While clearing an old concrete slab, we uncovered a hole that had been filled with trash and forgotten over time.
Curious to see what lay beneath, we began removing everything we could reach from above. Before long, we realized this was much more than a hole in the ground—it was an old hand dug well.
To clean it properly, we lowered a ladder into the well, and I carefully climbed down to begin removing decades of accumulated debris. As I descended deeper, the crew above placed boards between the ladder rungs to help support it while I continued downward.
Using a rope and bucket, they lowered empty buckets to me, and I filled them one at a time with old debris, tying each one off so it could be pulled back to the surface. Bucket after bucket, we slowly uncovered another piece of Timber Valley’s history.
When I finally reached the bottom, the reward was unforgettable. Beneath all those years of debris, crystal-clear spring water was still flowing through the natural stone walls, just as it had for generations.

After the well had been completely cleaned and the flowing spring was revealed once again, we wanted to make sure this remarkable piece of Timber Valley’s history would be protected for generations to come.
The original hand dug well remains just as it was, but to safeguard it, we added a concrete block well casing around the opening. That work was completed by the father of Randy, who worked with me in my lawn business and was an experienced mason.
Randy then built the wooden well house and installed the metal roof that protects the well today. Together, their craftsmanship helped preserve this hidden treasure while allowing visitors to safely appreciate a unique part of the farm’s history.
Today, when I look at the well, I don’t just see stone walls and flowing spring water. I remember climbing down into the darkness, filling bucket after bucket with decades of forgotten debris, and watching a forgotten piece of Timber Valley come back to life.
It’s a reminder that preserving history takes hard work—but it’s always worth the effort.
