Soaring Through History: 1 Incredible Day Trip Awaits ✈️

When you choose to escape to the peaceful, natural beauty of Timber Valley Retreat, you are not just booking a stay; you are opening the door to the hidden treasures of Western Maryland. While our retreat offers the perfect backdrop for recharging—whether you are hiking, enjoying a wagon ride, or stargazing under our dark skies—the surrounding area is rich with history waiting to be discovered. One of our favorite nearby experiences that perfectly complements a relaxing getaway is a visit to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. Located just 17.9 miles—a scenic 22-minute drive—from our property, this museum offers an immersive journey into the spirit of innovation that defines our region.

The Legacy of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting over 100 years of the region’s aviation heritage. Over the past 29 years, the museum has grown from a humble concept into the world’s largest collection of historic Fairchild aircraft. This remarkable evolution is a testament to the dedication of local volunteers and historians who recognized the importance of keeping this legacy alive for future generations.

The Legacy of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum is dedicated to preserving and presenting over 100 years of the region's aviation heritage. Over the past 29 years, the museum has grown from a humble concept into the world's largest collection of historic Fairchild aircraft. This remarkable evolution is a testament to the dedication of local volunteers and historians who recognized the importance of keeping this legacy alive for future generations.

The idea for an aviation museum in Hagerstown originated in 1995 during the Fairchild Homecoming Air Show. This event brought together the very individuals who built the planes—engineers, assembly line workers, and many WWII “Rosie the Riveters”. A display of Fairchild photos, models, and films was set up during the show, and attendees mistakenly assumed this was already the Hagerstown Aviation Museum. The excitement generated by this display led Richard Henson, Kent Mitchell, John Seburn, and Kurtis Meyers to officially organize the first non-profit museum in 1996.

For many years, the museum operated without a dedicated home, relying on outdoor events at the Hagerstown Regional Airport to showcase its growing collection. Annual events like the Wings & Wheels Expo drew thousands of visitors and provided rare, living history flight experiences in the museum’s Fairchild PT-19 aircraft, allowing guests to step into the boots of World War Two pilots.

A Deep Dive into the Collection

The heart of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum is its breathtaking array of historic aircraft, now housed in a way that respects their monumental legacy. Over the years, the organization has carefully curated 25 iconic aircraft that illustrate the evolution of flight.

Among the many treasures on display, visitors can discover:

  • The 1919 Bellanca CE.
  • The 1928 Kreider-Reisner KR-31.
  • The 1933 Fairchild 22.
  • The 1939 Fairchild 24.
  • The 1942 Fairchild PT-26.
  • The 1943 Fairchild PT-19.
  • The 1947 Fairchild XNQ.
  • The 1948 Fairchild C-82A.
  • The 1953 Fairchild C-119G Flying Boxcar.
  • The 1956 Fairchild C-123K Provider.
  • The 1959 Fairchild F-27.

However, the museum is far more than just its impressive fleet of planes. The archive has expanded significantly to include over ten thousand photographs and thousands of unique artifacts. Visitors will find an incredible collection of personal items, intricate models, vintage films, and inspiring works of art. These pieces provide a profound look into the lives of the people who powered the aviation industry, offering a heartfelt tribute to the engineers, the assembly line workers, and the legendary “Rosie the Riveters” who played such a pivotal role in history.

The Landmark Journey of the Dome Hangar

Securing a permanent home was the museum’s greatest challenge. After years of searching, a major turning point occurred on September 27, 2020, when the museum signed a lease for the historic 1943 Fairchild Aircraft Flight Test Hangar, famously known as the “Dome Hangar”. This agreement included an option to buy, effectively saving the architectural landmark from potential demolition.

The structure had been unoccupied for more than a decade, leaving it vulnerable to the ravages of time, including broken pipes and roof leaks. Demonstrating true community spirit, enthusiastic volunteers gathered on October 1, 2020—just four days after the lease was signed—to begin the demanding, hands-on work of preparing the hangar for occupancy.

The dream of making the Dome Hangar a permanent home became a reality through significant support. On February 22, 2022, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan visited the facility to tour the collection and review the organization’s vision. Following this visit, the State of Maryland provided $5 million to the museum, which empowered the organization to purchase the Dome Hangar, along with a restoration shop, an annex building, and 8 acres of ramp space.

The Future of the Museum

The grand opening of the Hagerstown Aviation Museum to the public on December 8, 2023, was a momentous occasion for the staff, volunteers, and the entire community. This milestone marked the end of many years without a physical home to showcase the museum’s extensive collection.

Looking ahead, the museum is actively conducting a Capital Campaign to fund the continued renovation of its facilities. These planned improvements include:

  • Expanded exhibit areas to better display the museum’s growing collection of artifacts and aircraft.
  • New, dedicated classroom spaces to facilitate educational outreach.
  • An “Aviation Factory Experience,” which will feature interactive STEM displays to inspire the next generation of innovators.

Our location is a premier destination for those who want to explore the historic C&O Canal and the majestic Potomac River. Situated in close proximity to the C&O Canal mile marker 108, we offer our guests unparalleled access to one of the most significant historical corridors in the United States.
  • Hiking and Exploration: The C&O Canal towpath provides endless miles of scenic hiking trails that wind through history, perfect for morning strolls or afternoon adventures.
  • River Recreation: Whether you enjoy the tranquility of kayaking or the fun of tubing, the Potomac River offers a variety of ways to engage with the water.
  • The “Timber Valley Trailblazer”: For a unique perspective on our property and the surrounding landscape, guests can enjoy our proprietary “Timber Valley Trailblazer” wagon rides.

Embracing the Great Outdoors

At Timber Valley Retreat, our philosophy is simple: the guest experience should be centered on the beauty of the natural world. We encourage our guests to explore our wooded sanctuary, which features large, moss-covered boulders. We kindly ask that visitors help us preserve this environment by not removing any moss from the boulders, as it can take between 20 and 100 years for new moss to fill back in.

As night falls, the experience becomes even more magical. The dark skies over the valley offer spectacular views, making us an ideal destination for those interested in astrotourism and stargazing. Whether you are sitting by a crackling fire or gazing up at the Milky Way, you will find that the serenity of our farm is unmatched. We are proud to share this space with our six resident dogs—two Black Labs and four Golden Retrievers—who love to greet our guests as they settle into their stay.

Deepening Your Timber Valley Experience

Beyond the convenience of our location near the C&O Canal and Potomac River, Timber Valley Retreat is a destination in itself. Our proprietary “Timber Valley Trailblazer” wagon rides offer a unique, guided perspective of the farm, taking you through our rolling fields and wooded areas where you can truly connect with the landscape. These rides are carefully crafted to provide an immersive experience, allowing you to see the farm’s beauty—including the large boulders and the lush, protected moss we work so hard to preserve—up close.

Dark Skies and Stargazing Magic

We take immense pride in promoting our location as a premiere “dark sky” destination for astrotourism. Because we are situated in a valley away from the overwhelming light pollution of larger cities, the night skies over the farm offer truly spectacular, unobstructed views of the constellations, planets, and the Milky Way. Whether you are an amateur astronomer or simply enjoy the wonder of the night sky, stargazing here is a tranquil activity that completes your retreat experience.

Life on the Farm: 100 Acres of Discovery

Living and working on this 100-acre property allows us to maintain a very personal connection with the land. We invite our guests to embrace the “farm life” atmosphere, which includes meeting our family of six dogs—our two Black Labs and four Golden Retrievers—who are always eager to welcome visitors. Whether you are wandering the trails, spending time by the spring-fed pond (please note we have a pond, not a lake!), or just listening to the natural sounds of the woods, there is always something to discover.

A Commitment to Sustainable Nature Preservation

We are deeply committed to the ecological health of our sanctuary. As you explore our wooded trails, you will notice large boulders covered in vibrant, delicate moss. We explicitly ask all guests to refrain from removing any moss from these boulders for any reason. It can take anywhere from 20 to 100 years for new moss to fill back in once it is disturbed, and by protecting it, you are helping us ensure this habitat remains beautiful for generations to come. This dedication to preservation is part of what makes a stay here so special—it is about respecting the rhythm of the land and leaving things better than we found them.

Two Distinct Experiences in One Beautiful Region

It is important to us that our guests understand the unique experiences offered at our two separate locations. While they share a deep commitment to natural beauty and high-quality hospitality, they serve different purposes.

  • Timber Valley Retreat: This is our glamping and lodging facility, a serene sanctuary perfect for those wanting to immerse themselves in nature. It offers a primitive tent site and three cozy, seasonal cabins, providing a peaceful escape far from the noise of daily life.
  • Timber Valley Farm Barn Rental: This is our dedicated event venue, an open-air structure designed for hosting weddings and special events. It is important to note that this venue does not have air conditioning, ensuring an authentic, open-air experience.

By distinguishing between the Hagerstown Aviation Museum experience—which provides an educational dive into history—and the nature-based stay at Timber Valley Retreat, guests can better plan their full itinerary in Washington County. Whether you are looking for an action-packed day trip or a quiet weekend of stargazing and river exploration, we are proud to offer both opportunities within our local community.
