A Beautiful View with an Unexpected Lesson
Rock Cliff C&O Canal is one of the most scenic stops along the historic C&O Canal Towpath. During our recent visit, we discovered breathtaking views of the Potomac River, remarkable wildlife, and an unexpected reminder of why every visitor plays a role in protecting the outdoors.
Some days, a walk turns into something much more.
We headed to Rock Cliff along the C&O Canal Towpath expecting to enjoy the overlook above Dam #5, photograph a little wildlife, and spend some quiet time beside the Potomac River.
The scenery didn’t disappoint.
Towering rock cliffs overlooked the river, a snapping turtle shared a spring-fed stream with a frog, and the peaceful sounds of nature reminded us why we love exploring places like this.
Wildlife Made the Visit Even More Special
As we continued exploring Rock Cliff, we were reminded that some of the best outdoor experiences happen when we slow down and pay attention.
Near the end of the spring-fed stream where it flows into the Potomac River, we watched a snapping turtle and a frog sharing the same habitat. Neither seemed concerned by the other. They simply continued living as nature intended.
It was a simple moment, but one that perfectly captured the beauty of healthy ecosystems.
We also spotted turtles, birds, and other signs of life that make this stretch of the C&O Canal such a rewarding place to visit.
These wildlife encounters don’t happen by accident. They exist because natural habitats continue to provide food, shelter, and clean water for countless species.
That’s why protecting these places matters.

The View Deserved Better
As beautiful as Rock Cliff was, one discovery was impossible to ignore.
Scattered across the overlook were aluminum cans, plastic bottles, food containers, and other litter that someone had simply walked away from.
Standing there overlooking the Potomac River, one question kept coming to mind:
Who’s going to clean this up after you do this?
Natural places don’t stay beautiful on their own.
Someone eventually has to pick up what others leave behind.
The wildlife certainly can’t.
Neither can the river.
Seeing that trash among such breathtaking scenery reminded us that every visitor leaves an impact. The question is whether that impact makes a place better or worse for the next person who arrives.

From One Visit Came a Bigger Purpose
As we drove home, we couldn’t stop thinking about what we had experienced that day.
We had witnessed incredible scenery, photographed remarkable wildlife, and enjoyed one of the most beautiful overlooks along the C&O Canal.
We had also seen firsthand how quickly a special place can be diminished when visitors fail to care for it.
That experience inspired us to create a permanent resource for our guests and readers.

Our day at Rock Cliff C&O Canal didn’t end when we left the overlook.
It came home with us.
