As the wagon pulls away from the staging area near Tanner’s Bunkhouse, Jake’s Bunkhouse, and Amber Lodge, the first thing you’ll notice is the shift in pace. Our journey begins by traversing the back-country roads that border our expansive fields. These aren’t just patches of grass; they are carefully managed fields of grain and alfalfa. 🌾 Depending on the month of your visit, the visual experience changes entirely. In the early spring, you’ll see the bright, neon-green shoots of winter wheat or rye pushing through the soil. By mid-summer, the alfalfa is thick and fragrant, often being cut and baled for the livestock.
The alfalfa fields are a critical part of the local ecosystem. They provide nitrogen to the soil and serve as a habitat for local honeybees and butterflies. This section of the ride follows the historic C&O Canal and the towpath. 🌊 The trees here—oaks, maples, and sycamores—have stood for decades, their branches intertwining above the road to create a natural tunnel. Look for the “beaver chews” on the trees along the road. 🌳 These nature’s engineers can take down surprisingly large trees to build their lodges and dams. Keep your eyes wide open for the local peacocks! 🦚 These stunning birds are often seen wandering along the roadside, their iridescent feathers catching the light. Along with the peacocks, we pass a local farm where curious goats often come to the fence to greet the wagon. 🐐✨ It’s a joyful, lively way to conclude the ride. The kids love talking to the goats, and the peacocks never fail to impress with their exotic beauty. 🦚❤️
